'A' (А, а) is the first letter of the
Cyrillic alphabet.
It arose directly from the Greek letter
alpha. In the
Early Cyrillic alphabet its name was ''azǔ'' and it had a numerical value of
1.
In many languages that use Cyrillic, such as
Russian,
Serbian,
Macedonian and
Bulgarian, it denotes . It may also represent and in languages such as
Ingush and
Chechen.
Through history, it has had various shapes, but today is standardised on one that looks exactly like the Latin ''
a'' (including the
italicized form).
