As of January 1, 2005 the district had 6 towns and 2 villages.

On January 1, 2005, the town of Notsu dissolved from the district when the town merged with the city of Usuki to form the new city of Usuki. The remaining 5 towns and 2 villages merged on March 31, 2005 to form the new city of Bungo-ōno and Ōno District dissolved

★ Parts of the town of Asaji merged into the town of Ogata.


★ Parts of the town of Asaji merged into the town of Naoiri in Naoiri District.

★ October 1, 1956 -Parts of the town of Notsu merged into the town of Mie.

★ April 1, 1957


★ Parts of the village of Kiyokawa merged into the town of Mie.


★ Parts of the village of Kiyokawa merged into the town of Ogata.


★ Parts of the town of Inukai merged into the town of Notsu.

★ January 1, 2005 - The town of Notsu merged with the city of Usuki to form the city of Usuki. (5 towns, 2 villages)

★ March 31, 2005 - The towns of Mie, Asaji, Inukai, Ogata, Ōno, and the villages of Kiyokawa and Chitose merged to form the city of Bungo-ōno. Ōno District dissolved as a result.
