 | Rita Reys Rita, behalve First Lady of Jazz, ook de eminence grise van de vocale swing. Een lange, even bloeiende als boeiende wereld-omspannende carrière. Een loopbaan, die begin jaren vijftig in Scandinavië begon, een vaderlands debuut op vinyl in 1955 met Jazz Behind The Dikes en de oversteek naar Amerika in 1956 en 1957. Rita studeerde geen zang aan een conservatorium. Zij groeide zélf al snel uit tot een vocaal instituut, zichzelf vormend door een intense betrokkenheid bij de ontwikkelingen in de jazz. Begin jaren zestig was haar stem tot volle wasdom gekomen en in combinatie met haar weergaloze timing was zij tot een jazz-diva van mondiaal allure uitgegroeid. En dat is ze tot op de dag van vandaag gebleven! Hoewel de jaren natuurlijk ook aan haar niet voorbij zijn gegaan kent haar stem nog immer een bijzondere vastheid, is haar timing nog even onnavolgbaar en maakt haar presentatie haar ere-titel First Lady of Jazz volledig waar. De Beets Brothers, de drie broers Marius (1966, contrabas), Alexander (1968, tenorsaxofoon) en Peter (1971, piano) Beets spelen zeer toegankelijke mainstream jazz, waarvan het karakter kan variëren van ingetogen tot uiterst dynamisch. Door de jaren heen is een geheel eigen "sound" ontwikkeld. Kenmerk hiervan is een zeer melodieuze toonvoering, geënt op sterk swingende ritme-patronen. Deze heldere stijl leidt tot een buitengewoon harmonieus complex in de beste tradities van de swingende jazz. Pianist Peter Beets -winnaar van vele jazz-prijzen, de meest recente in Parijs in 1998 en in Monaco in 1999- wordt alom erkend te behoren tot de wereld-top. Zijn spel wordt gekenmerkt door een fabelachtige techniek, een prachtig toucher, een soevereine timing en een magistrale toon-expressie. "Rita Reys meets The Beets Brothers". Ondanks een leeftijdsverschil van decennia blijkt er geen enkele sprake van een generatie-kloof. Dit illustreert eens temeer, dat Nederlands Grande Dame van de Swing op geen enkele wijze het contact met de hedendaagse jazz heeft verloren! Deze ontmoeting tussen twee grootheden, Rita vocaal en Peter achter de vleugel, ondersteund door een ritme-sectie die staat als een huis en met als sideman een lyrische tenor-saxofonist belooft een unieke ervaring, die in geen enkel theater mag ontbreken.
