'Övertorneå Municipality' (Finnish name: ''Matarengi'' or ''Matarenki'') is a
Swedish municipality in
Norrbotten County, in northern
Sweden. Its seat is in the small town 'Övertorneå', with around 2,000 inhabitants located at the shore of the
Torne River, opposite to
Ylitornio (Övertorneå is Swedish translation of Ylitornio). Until the border between Sweden and
Finland was drawn at the Torne River in 1809, the two villages on separate sides on the river were one.
Many names of places in the municipality have both a Swedish and a Finnish name, in the local dialect of
Finnish known as one of the
minority languages of Sweden,
meänkieli.
