Baron 'Édouard-Jean Empain' is a Belgian industrialist, mostly known by the general public for his kidnapping in 1978.
Since 1971, Baron Empain was CEO of the Schneider group.
On January 23, 1978, Baron Empain was kidnapped when exiting his home in Paris, France. His captors, led by Georges Bertoncini, requested a ransom of 100 million French francs. In order to pressure the family in paying, they amputated Empain of his little finger.
Empain was freed by his captors on March 26, 1978 after one of his takers was arrested by the police.
In 2003, Empain and one of his associates were prosecuted for fraudulous bankruptcy. They were acquitted.[1]
