'Aarhus municipality', also commonly known by its
Danish spelling 'Ã…rhus municipality', is a municipality (Danish, ''
kommune'') on the east coast of the
Jutland peninsula in central
Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 469
km², and has a total population of 296,170 (2007). Its
Lord Mayor is
Nicolai Wammen, a member of the
Socialdemokraterne (Social Democrats)
political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the city of
Aarhus.
Neighboring municipalities are
Syddjurs to the north,
Favrskov to the northwest,
Skanderborg to the southwest, and
Odder to the south.
Aarhus municipality was not merged with other municipalities due to the nationwide
''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007).
